Zhipeng folk songs are the traditional folk music of Wanzai County, born in the Ming dynasty with over 500 years of history. They are mountain songs created by workers making Biaoxin paper as they labored — rich in content and varied in form.
The songs follow the papermaking steps — cutting bamboo, retting it, drying the paper — and weave together themes of hard work, love between men and women and hopes for the harvest. Melodic and brisk in rhythm, they carry a strong local flavor.
In March 2007, Zhipeng folk songs were inscribed on the Jiangxi provincial intangible cultural heritage list, becoming one of Wanzai County's most important cultural treasures.
