The Desheng Drum ("Victory Drum") is the traditional folk drum music of Wanzai County. Born in the Northern Song and drawing its themes from the Tang-dynasty quelling of the An Shi Rebellion, it is famed for its thunderous, stirring power, its tightly unified rhythms and its richly varied performances.
A Desheng Drum troupe typically numbers in the dozens, playing large drums, small drums, suona horns, gongs and cymbals. Formations shift as they play and the beats stay bright and brisk — a full display of the bold spirit and solidarity of Wanzai's people.
Today the Desheng Drum is one of Wanzai's signature cultural brands, performed at festivals and celebrations throughout the county and beloved by locals and visitors alike.
